Obituary

Madeline Ruth Carrington, 91, of Goose Creek, SC, (formerly Fort Walton Beach,

FL, but originally from Vanceburg, KY), passed away on July 5 th , 2022, after a brief

illness, at home with her nieces by her side. Madge, as she was known to all, was

a country girl born into a farmer’s family in Stricklett, KY (Lewis County) on

October 3, 1930, and was the second oldest of 7 children.

Madge was preceded in death by her husband, Alex R. Carrington; her parents,

Emery and Goldie Crawford; her 2 sisters Christine Crawford Burton, and Noreen

Crawford; 3 brothers, Arnold, Howard, and Shelby Crawford; and a niece and

nephew. She is survived by her brother, Dale Crawford, of Clover, SC; 4 nieces, 4

nephews, 4 grandnieces and 8 grandnephews.

She graduated from Lewis County High School in May of 1949. At age 19, she met

Alex Carrington, both a farmer and WWII veteran. They were married on July 1,

1950, and they were married for almost 23 years before he passed. Alex was the

love of her life and Madge never remarried. While she never had any children of

her own, she shared her sister and brothers’ children, some of whom thought of

Madge as a second Mom. After Alex’s passing, she stayed on the family farm and

worked in Vanceburg. She spent her time in the company of cherished friends and

family. Madge remained in Lewis County for another 11 years before moving on

her own to Florida, where she lived for the next 35 years. In late December 2018,

she moved to South Carolina to live with her oldest niece, Boneta Tapoc.

In Florida, she found peace through walks on the beach, with the smell of salt in

the air and the feeling of sand between her toes. She had a creative mind and

enjoyed crafting. Madge hand-made treasures such as crochet blankets,

homemade quilts, woven baskets, and decorated t-shirts. She loved her time at

the YMCA and the good friends she made there while doing Tai Chi and water

aerobics. She felt strongly about her friendships, some stretching back as far as

her early childhood years. She was always one to write letters or call, keeping in

touch with her cherished friends and family, through the entirety of her life.

Madge loved time spent with her family, and especially cherished her time

watching her nieces and nephews grow up. During the time spent with her niece,

Boneta, she enjoyed camping adventures to many locations and enjoyed the

peaceful time spent outdoors.
