Russell Eugene Hickle, passed away peacefully on August 20th, 2021 at the age of 89, at his home in Vanceburg, Kentucky after a brief illness. Russell was a member of the Vanceburg Christian Church.
He was born in Vanceburg, KY on September 2nd, 1931, son of the late Clyde Earl Hickle and Violet Swords Hickle. He is preceded in death by, sister Peggy Grayson and brother Mitchell Hickle. He is survived by his sister Shirley Bohmer of Estero, FL. He is survived by his spouse, Helen Dummitt Hickle, and his son, Charles Hickle (Patty), and daughters, Eugene O’Cull (John) and Jamie Hickle. According to “Gene” his greatest accomplishment in life was his family and he was proud of his seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren combined with his beautiful family.
Gene attended Lewis County High School and became a successful construction worker/superintendent specializing in highways, structures and drainage expertise. He also was the owner of Hickle’s Carry-Out in Vanceburg and played a big part in community sponsorships for sports teams and county events. His strong work ethic was the key to his success to provide for his family and other families of which he could assist with maintaining employment.
In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing in Canada and Florida with friends and family. He and wife Helen also spent their winters enjoying the sunshine and friends in southwest Florida. He had a joy for food; shrimp, fish, oysters, spaghetti alfredo and chicken and dumplings were just a few of his favorites.
Gene was recognized at the Lewis County High School in 2020 for being the oldest living basketball player for the Lewis County Lions, a very special event and accomplishment.
The private memorial visitation will be held at the Gaydos Funeral Home, 159 2nd Street, Vanceburg, KY on Tuesday August 24th, 2021 at 10:00 AM. The immediate family member funeral service is 11:00 AM at Gaydos Funeral Home, Gravesite service will be held at the Lewis County Memory Gardens in Black Oak, Kentucky.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Russell Eugene Hickle to the Alzheimer’s Institute. Our family is especially thankful for the Hospice of Hope of Maysville, Kentucky.
