Mr. Sanford J. ‘Hank’ McCane, Age 95, of Vanceburg, Kentucky passed away Tuesday morning January 21, 2020 at his home after an extended illness.
Hank as he was known by many was born in Lewis County, Kentucky December 28th, 1924 to the late Henry Scott and Ermel J. Kennedy McCane.
Starting at an early age Hank worked for the L.V. Marks & Son here in Vanceburg, Ky. He worked for various Industries throughout the area one being the Walls Company in Maysville, Ky. Hank also was a farmer for 30 years. He ran the first sanitation department for Vanceburg. Along with his family he owned and operated McCanes variety store for over 40 years. He attended the Clarksburg Christian Church and Southern Manor Church. Hank was a veteran of World War II where he served in the 83rd Infantry Division and was wounded in combat earning him the Purple Heart, among other honorable citations.
Preceded him in death beside his parents was his wife of 69 years Mary Kathryn Thurman McCane in 2016. Two sons- Michael A. McCane in 1994 and Joseph Allen McCane in 2002. Two brothers- Naman McCane and Jude McCane. 2-sisters- Naomi Walje and Thelma McCane. One great- grandson- Tanner Gilliam.
Left to cherish Hanks’ memories are,
One daughter- Karen (Michael) Kempf of Fayeteville, Ohio.
Three sons- Jack (Sheila) McCane of Garrison, Ky., Danny (Portia) McCane of Vanceburg, Ky., and David (Cherie) McCane of Winchester, Ky.
One brother- James Wedsel ‘Tom’ McCane of Vanceburg, Ky. And one sister- Markie Caseman of Las Vegas, Nevada.
21-grandchildren, 32-great-grandchildren, and 5-great-great-grandchildren who will also mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be Saturday January 25th, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the Clarksburg Christian Church with Dr. Robert Ford and Pastor Lyle Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Muses Chapel cemetery Quicks Run, Ky.
Friends may call Saturday January 25, 2020 from 10:00 am until time of services at the Clarksburg Christian Church.
Pallbearers for Sanford J. ‘Hank’ McCane will be David McCane, Jack McCane, Adam Christy, Scott McCane, Steven Reis, and Ryan Swingler. Honorary pallbearers Walter Gilliam, Darrin Spence, Matthew Spence, Dustin Cawood, Joey McCane, Andrew Swingler, and Kenton Swingler.
Military graveside rites will be accorded by the V.F.W. Post 5438 Monte Lewis Stamm Vanceburg, Ky.
